Every Saturday night during the cold winter months, members of the Brentwood Hills family host 14 men from the Nashville community in the Family Life Center. In addition to 3 meals, these men are given a place to stay the night.

Anthony Herring, one of the men who stayed here last Saturday, wrote the following poem:

A Jar of Clay

At times I feel like a jar of clay,
That my Savior opened and began to mold one day,
And as He began to mold His pot,
I began to do things that I should not.

And suddenly the pot began to crumble,
All because the clay wasn’t humble,
But God was all wise and knew I would stumble,
And never once did He even grumble.

He lovingly put me back on the wheel,
And began to perform His magic once more,
Because He had great things and blessings in store.

And now I am almost the piece He desires,
I am just about ready to go in the fire,
To be sealed with His knowledge and wisdom and love,
Never to be the man I once was.

Even though 2009 is over, and Brentwood Hills has a new theme, Anthony’s poem was a good reminder that God is (and will always be) the Potter, and we are (and will always be) the clay.

"The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, 'Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.' So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over." - Jeremiah 18:1-4 (NLT)

God never gives up on a lump of clay. He will start over as many times as needed until the clay becomes what He wants it to be.
