Let it snow!
The “Word from Walt” is typically written on Thursday mornings … and typically read on Sunday mornings. On this particular Thursday morning there is “snow” in Nashville’s weather forecast – on every channel – 100% chance – with several inches predicted for the area. Although I know everyone does not share my “childish enthusiasm,” a snowy forecast still excites me.
However, experience has caused me to temper my enthusiasm with some caution, even skepticism. I’ve lived long enough to know that a forecast can be very disappointing, and on many occasions over the years my hopes have been dashed – even though the meteorologists had promised inches of snow locally, with a 100% guarantee. As you are reading these words you already know whether it snowed since Thursday and to what extent. However, as I write these words all I can do … is hope!
This reminds me of a proverb:
"Hope deferred makes the heart sick …"--Proverbs 13:12 NIV
Any student who has made the mistake of trusting in a snowy weather forecast rather than prepare for a test the next day can probably relate to that proverb on a very personal level. But it can be so much more serious than that! There are a number of other “forecasts” that can raise our hopes, and sometimes set the stage for painful disappointments. Here are just a few examples:
“We’ll be contacting you this week.” “Your future with us is secure.” “The check is in the mail.” “You can count on me!”
Life can be filled with disappointments, and almost all of them are so much more serious than an incorrect snow forecast. However, it’s wonderfully encouraging to be reminded that we serve a living God who is absolutely reliable. God’s “forecasts” are what we typically call “promises,” and we can stake our lives on His promises – 100% of the time!
"We are very happy because of the hope we have …and this hope will never disappoint us."--Romans 5:2-5 ERV
